Torque X 3D Binary Free (as in $0.00)

by Trent · in Torque X 3D · 06/01/2009 (10:48 pm) · 4 replies

I remember the TorqueX 2 binary was free, and as far as I can tell there is nothing stopping the binary of TX3 working after trial expiration (except of course builder will stop working), but I notice it not longer says free, but rather Trial.

So is there a license change or is it still free?

Hi Trent- fundamentally the 2D and the 3D engines are the same, the difference is in the tools. To be honest the binary isn't much use on it's own. We changed "Free" to "Trial", because most users did not understand the difference between the tools and the engine only. In short, yes, if you can work productively with the binary-only engine, there is no charge. However, we are purposely not calling it a free engine, because we don't want people to get the the end of the tools trial and generate a bunch of redundant support inquires for a "broken engine."

Hi Davey,

Thanks for that clarification. It makes perfect sense to do it that way, and indeed, I had suspected it was something like that.

Currently I'm just trying to get my head around the way Torque X works, and I have to say it's not easy, well, with the provided documentation it's not, but I bit the bullet and bought John K's book, which is really helpful, so I don't see myself sticking with the binary only unless I hit financial difficulties or the Aussie dollar suddenly drops in value against the greenback... Torque X is currently getting cheaper every day ;)

Yes, John's book is THE resource for TX.
Good luck with your Aussie Bucks. Doing everything I can to reverse that trend : ).

It's nearly $7 cheaper today... another $2.89 and it will be under AU$300 :)
