what's your favorite software to record videos of torque?

by Peter Mowry · in Torque 3D Professional · 05/28/2009 (5:23 pm) · 14 replies

Such as to post on youtube.com or vimeo.com etc

Probably I should post them somewhere else too besides Torque 3D...

---

My list so far, but more are welcome:

Video record for DirectX/OpenGL:
* FRAPS ($37; weird: why didn't they make it an even $40 or $39.99 hehe)

Video record for general (desktop videos) (for Torque 3D to see the Qt GUI stuff?):
* BSR Screen Recorder (Bulent's) ($40)
* Camtasia studio ($300), (techsmith also has lightweight Jing) (edit some too)
* http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_screencasting_software : mentions others

Video recording, edit, convert:
* Windows Movie Maker (free)
* BSR Movie Lab (editing) ($50)
* Camtasia studio ($300) (record and edit some)
* Sony Vegas ($55 to $600)
* Adobe Premier Pro CS4 ($800)

Video convert:
* AVS Video Converter to convert to an appropriate format, bitrate, etc
* Virtual Dub with FFDshow codec for compression

Video upload/host:
* youtube.com (more popular standard)
* vimeo.com (higher quality, owned by same parent company as GG) (concerns that they might delete your video since it's a game video, and that's against the EULA?)

Well, to record... I use Fraps.

To publish to the net, I use Youtube, simply because I happen to have an account there.

I typically use FRAPS, but for videos that include the World Editor, FRAPS has issues seeing the file menu and it doesn't really work, so I'll use Camtasia for those. I usually do editing in Adobe Premiere.

FRAPS for recording and Windows Movie Maker for editing.

i want to know which product automatically adds the annoying and pointless music tracks to any video posted to youtube, just so that i can avoid it, or at least hack it so adds vivaldi rather than some rock trash :p

With youtube AudioSwap you can choose a music track if your movie has no sound or music.

This is an T3D movie made with fraps and AudioSwap.

@Kees - Thats really sweet... you know... you could totally write a PostEffect in T3D that does that same effect in during gameplay.

It would be really freaking cool to play that way.

NVidia's post scratched film effect

Yeah, that would be an awesome effect for in-game use!

Oh yeah: FRAPS or any good hardware capture and encoding device.

@Kees: that's a Torque 3D video? I really couldn't tell at first, but after looking closely I guess I can see that (the sky is torque) and (the flowers are sprites). The rest of the stuff (the middle-gruond) I don't know what it is (must be custom). Anyway, very cool video clip :-). PostEffect sounds great too :-)

@Bloodknight: I kind of agree, the reason I think it's annoying is that it's emotionally and psychologically confusing... Like you confuse whether or not you like the arbitrary background music with feelings about the actual video. Or, you get stuck in your head, some arbitrary association between the video and the background music.

Anyway, this isn't the right place for our rant if you ask me. It should be on youtube.com :-p

As for Youtube's incidental music ... if I ain't gonna stick my own on it, then I'd rather have it audioless, especially if it's a video showcasing functions and the sort. Don't think any of my old TGE pathfiding vids have audio at all, they're just taken to show off working pathfinding.

I use Blender for video editing. No joke. It's definitely not up there with a dedicated VSE but it's free and it gets the job done, especially if all I need to do is cut up some captures and render them out for YouTube.

Blender is my favorite also, I think this is by far the best free video editing software you can get.
For recording videos I use MSI Afterburner, originally a tool for overclocking your graphics card, but it is free and has a powerful recording function.
