Will Blender3d be supported?

by Andrea Barolo · in Torque 3D Professional · 05/26/2009 (7:49 am) · 4 replies

Blender exporter for DTS has worked good for tgea till now thanks to his author support. I'm wondering if, now that T3d is supporting Collada, this will be abandoned? Blender Collada exporter is not working at 100% for the time being and it's not being worked on now, so I'm fearing that we will have neither solutions working completely.

The current Blender to .dts exporter still works fine for me. Never bothered with Collada myself... yet. Just because Torque 3D supports Collada doesn't mean that .dts will be going away anytime soon (and that's a good thing IMO). What many people fail to realize is that when you bring a collada object into Torque 3D it in turn creates a "cached .dts" for use in the game.

Whether or not the Blender exporter sees further work, especially if the .dts format sees a radical change, will depend on JSG, and as far as I know he hasn't stopped yet.

Second everything Michael just said.

Unless DTS itself gets scrapped (which doesn't seem likely at all) all DTS exporters will work fine. Blender exported meshes, characters and animations works fine in T3D.

Collada seems really useful for an independant team working across a variety of modelling programs, but I haven't used it and probably won't.

I'll add that I've been using the Blender Collada exporter for a few weeks and have had only minor issues. Can you be more specific about what problems you've been having?

Keep in mind that with the advent of Collada DTS exporter support will slowly degrade over time, since Collada allows the addition of new features without the burden of having to update countless exporters for different versions of different modeling apps.

There's a new feature already working: vertex colors.
