Torque X 3D causing Windows Vista to crash

by Ashiedu Nwadiei · in Torque X 3D · 05/23/2009 (10:15 am) · 6 replies

I'm running Windows Vista Ultimate x64. When I try quitting Torque X Builder 3D it causes Windows to freeze up and crash. I've uninstalled and reinstalled a few times, but still the same thing happens. Any clues on how to fix?

Not a problem in Vista x32 apparently. I guess I'll be using that on a separate hard drive partition since nobody has any knowledge of this glitch or what could cause it.

FYI in case it helps, I'm running on Vista Ultimate 64 and not having this problem, so at least whatever is causing it is not due solely to the specific OS.

I sent in a bug report. I'm sure it could be a number of factors. I don't know enough about programingto know what happens when an application quits. Sometimes I could still move the mouse cursor, but other times it promptly froze the screen and the OS reboots.

You have fresh video drivers with no funky FRAPS/etc video munging?
Right?

System level video drivers can bring down the OS, but 'user' level drivers aren't supposed to.

I too have run it on Vista Ultimate 64-bit. I agree with Nanomid that video driver funkiness could be causing issues. Sometimes Vista seems to 'lose' the specific drivers for your video card and uses somewhat generic ones that cover your resolutions. This can be accompanied by having your screen resolution change on a restart/reboot.

Definitely figure out what video card you have installed and reinstall the latest drivers from the manufacturer, and then go through the process of powering down your PC and starting it back up again ( too much stuff can survive a restart for me to feel secure with it in an unknown-problem situation ).

Other than that, make sure you try running it as Admin. Make sure there isn't anything else that sucks video resources running in the background. You could possibly see this sort of thing happening with an overzealous virus checker. Not too long ago, my unnamed employer had to go through a fire-drill because one anti-virus vendor's update made their software flag our stuff ( inappropriately ) as hostile.

Make sure you do your testing with a new starter project, instead of trying to work with the FPS demo, to keep your testing more focused. Make sure there are no dots '.' in the directory path to the project you are working with.

Thats it for my ideas.

I'm using the latest ATI ones, but at least with that system install the problem persists. In Vista x86, I'm running the same stuff. I'm not using Catalyst this time however. Maybe it was a conflict with something else I installed, but I have no idea what it could be. If it's not something specific to Torque, I'll just keep watch over the software I install and see if the problem happens again.

Thanks.
