A Challenge - Paper Graphics, Is it possible?

I was looking to develop a game where all characters are "paper thin" (think paper mario) and animated... but i don't know how can i actually pull this off in Gamemaker. Anyone care to venture a guess or a helping hand?
Here are the quirks:
The game is fully on Isometric view (but i can drop that if needed)
I wanted for the characters to look like they are cut outs from a sheet of paper
Please reply if you have any idea on how to pull this off.

Also, if anyone else can find tutorials or any more material on how to work with that style, could you please point it out?
