Blender 3DS import

by Alex Stanfill · in Artist Corner · 05/13/2009 (6:01 pm) · 4 replies

I have three 3DS building model files, and only one seems to be importing to Blender correctly.

The other two have all pieces of the building scattered instead of lining up with each other.

As an example, here's one:
http://archive3d.net/?a=download&do=get&id=23954

File>Import>3DS and the file loads up, but as you can see is scattered about.

Is there a way to get it to import properly?
If not, does anyone know what I need to do to fix it?
(I know nothing of modeling. It looks like the center point for each piece of the building is in a different spot. Could that be an issue?)

Thanks for any time you contribute :)

As far as I know, if it's not all one mesh - thus multiple objects - 3DS will import in pieces as though it has been pulled outwards.
and after a quick try .... yep, pieces.

You might want to search through blendernation or some other site for docs, but I don't know of any solutions.

Hm... Yeah, that makes sense. Thank you very much for replying :)

I couldn't find any documentation except that from within the script itself, which didn't say anything about multiple objects vs. a single one.

My only concern would be that I've found another building that consists of multiple objects yet is imported correctly:

In any case, what can I do IN BLENDER to re-form the model besides manually repositioning every piece?

For the first model I mentioned, actually, I was able to assemble them most of the way by using Object>Transform>ObData to Center (but there were still pieces off!) and that didn't work for another model I had.

Ahh .... manually repositioning not what you want ot hear then ... neither would I!

Try to find things which are in a more friendly format ... OBJ is usually good for importing. Try and find someone who has access to 3DSmax and ask them to convert it into another format. This isn't really that helpful I know.

No, no, that's fine. I thank you very much for your input :)

I'm simply trying to utilize the thousands of free 3DS models available on the internet (as I'm sure every other Indie tries to do) even though they can be quite a mess as placeholders for official art. Honestly I'm thankful even if only one out of three work and I'd consider manually repositioning each piece. It's just a placeholder after all :)
