Question regarding "masks" in T3D Terrain

I have been experimenting with creating terrain in T3D. I am trying to use files generated by L3DT to create a 2048 X 2048 terrain, which I had orignally used to create an Atlas terrain in TGEA.
I can successfully import a heightfield, however I am a little unsure about masks. From what I have learned from reading the documentation, the mask is essentially a map, which tells T3D where to paint the texture that is associated with that mask. So, you could have one mask for low-lying plains, one for upland regions, and one for snow-capped mountains. This would result in the terrain being automatically painted with those three textures in the right places. Is this correct?
How then do I create masks myself, given the files I have access to from L3DT?
