Question about networking

by Raquel Ventero · in Torque 3D Professional · 04/21/2009 (3:29 pm) · 15 replies

My question is about combining Torque 3D with TGB 2D.

Will it be posible to merge the networking system of Torque 3D in the actual TGB 2D?

Thanks,
Raquel

T3D is likely using the same networking as TGEA and TGE, so it will be as hard as always due to the fact that TGB has cut out the core class in its hierarchy that is used for the networking combined with the rewrite of the namespace functionality and the differences in the datablocks (in TGB they are only declaration and not that much required, in TGE(A) they are the core of everything as they are syncronized over the network when you join the server)

There is an old old TDN documentation about getting the full TGE network to work with T2D (yes this is before they renamed it TGB). You can check it here. It's not complete, but it'll give you an idea of where to start looking.

I asked a similar question with regards to web publishing on this forum, and got the following response:

Quote:There is news coming after Torque 3D about TGB/Torque 2D and web deployment will be a part of it

So it might be best to wait for the next release of T2D and see what they do with it.

Thanks for your answers! I am only buying Torque 3D for its networking system. I hope someone of Garage Games can answer if they have time! :)

You should probably look to using TNL, which is basically the networking for TGE/A without the rest of the engine. That will make it a bit easier, since you won't have to look as hard for what you need to bring over, and just concentrate on getting TNL in.

Just that TNL costs you just as much as TGEA without the "how does it work best" part. Given that she already owns TGEA as she has the T3D preorder, there is not much of a reason to make the whole thing harder than needed, is there.

I don't own TGEA, should I? I just preorder T3D, assuming that it has the same networking system and, of course, trying to get the most advanced engine GarageGame has and looking for something under support. I think they won't support anymore TGEA (I am not sure of this point).

I thought opentnl.org was still up, which is why I mentioned it, but checking now, I see it's gone.

even if, OpenTNL can not be used with TGB Pro as the GPL enforcement of OpenTNL would have made it a clear licence violation.

Only the nonfree version ($300+) would have been an option.

But yes, they have vanished.

Go to the TGEA page while logged in and see how much they want for you to buy it, lol. If it's $0.00 then go ahead and buy it. :)

I'm not sure if TGEA/T3D works this way but it worked with TGE/TGEA. I never bought TGE but with my TGEA purchase, I was able to "buy" TGE, here for free.

If you can't get TGEA, my personal take is that you should, since technically you could have bought TGEA, then upgraded for just the difference in cost. Contact support at support@garagegames.com if that's the case and see if they can give you TGEA (it's worth a shot).

Even if they stop supporting TGEA in the future, you can at least start taking a look at the network code now. :)

Says $295 here...
Might have been smarter to buy TGEA first then just have the discount when getting T3D, but laziness won :-)

I'm sure a GG employee would get you access to TGEA, would make sense.

Hm yes, might be worth dropping them an e-mail, if only to get access to the forums.

I'm checking on this to see if there will be an automated way to do this (like TGE costs $0 for TGEA licensees).
