I keep hearing torque pipeline to import maya asset is really crappy
I'm using unity and considering other engines, I am used to double clicking on an asset inside unity = opening file in maya.
how does torque compare ?

All you need is the Maya exporter, then you export your assets from Maya to a .dts, and providing everything turned out okay it can be loaded into Torque. There are of course certain conventions you have to adhere to, which should be detailed in the artist documentation and here in the forums.
