Another Great 3D Modeler::FREE

To anybody thats familiar with Milkshape, or if you're looking for a free low-poly modeler to get you started Anim8tor www.anim8or.com/ is a good place to start. As stated, its interface is similar to Milkshape's and it has features that Milkshape doesn't such as bevel, intrude, the ability to alter a mesh while in an ortho or perspective view, etc. Anim8tor is also, as the name implies, an animator as well. The only downfall is there's no exporter for DTSs. Not to worry though. It does export to .obj which, if I'm not mistaken, can be imported into Blender, another freebie that does export to DTS. 2 free modelers that can produce high-quality DTS's ain't bad so if you're interested check it out!

PS. Complete documentation: www.anim8or.com/manual/index.html

M'eh:
I simply don't look at modeling programs that do not contain skeletal structures/nodes/bones/joints and parse them out to a meaningful export format[what, animate and export an OBJ:wrong!]....you just have to use another program that supports skeletal animation systems to continue work. With lowPoly work, sometimes I fail to see the need for 'uberTools' to manipulate vertices. Sure, if you're Zbrushing or Mudboxing...nice sculpting tools are great, but for the 3500-5000 points we're using, eh. I'd rather have something to animate this mesh with.

For meshes, for FREE, you could just use trueSpace 7.6....lot's of uberTools to sculpt meshes in there....

I mean, if you have to export to Blender[as OBJ] to re-rig and export to DTS, what is the point of using anima8or??

I just looked, under FEATURES: export 3DS shapes...what,no rigs?? B'ah. Didn't see the OBJ parse as a 'feature'. Last 'big' update to software was nearly 2 years ago....

Sorry rex, this thread was aimed at people that had no 3d modeling skills at all
Quote:if you're looking for a free low-poly modeler to get you started...
and were looking to learn the basics of 3d modeling with a free, user-friendly app that does animate and does export to .obj(I know, I've used it before). IF they became comfortable with this app, there are ways to continue to use it for Torque game models. There are plenty of people that use 1, 2, 3 different modeling apps to achieve the results that they're looking for soooo...

Also, there are plenty of people that "utilize cannons to kill flies" by using 3d apps that offer WAY more than is actually needed to model and animate for games. Rather than pay a bunch of money for an app full of tools that they'll never use nor need, I figured I'd suggest a useful learning tool to get noobs started.

Haven't tried Milkshape or Anim8or but here's another one to throw into the mix -> http://www.wings3d.com/

It was decent a few years back so probably better now. But if you want to pay for something, nothing beats Modo for modeling imho. :)
