Rookie question on initial screen resolution?

I am about to build 2D beat em up game on TGB. As I begin setting up and considering sprite size and back ground area etc, this question occured to me.
When I set up the screen resolution (which I would like to be high (maybe 1280x920), is this going to affect my gameplay in anyway? What I mean by that is if I have say 7 animating sprite characters on a screen at one time along with sliding backgrounds for visual depth, is this choice of resolution going to bite me in the but in terms of lag? If so perhaps I should go with less detailed screen rez and less detailed sprites as well to ensure smooth gameplay???

There are also people who still run 1024x768, and then there are those tiny, dinky wannabe-laptops at 7"-10", with other strange (small) resolutions. All capable of playing TGB games to some extent :)

1280x920?! What sort of weirdo resolution is that? Most smaller laptops have 1280x800 as their resolution (16:10 aspect), so consider that. About half the 15" laptops are at the same resolution, the rest 1440x900. Some rare ones go higher (custom ones from companies that build to order).There are also people who still run 1024x768, and then there are those tiny, dinky wannabe-laptops at 7"-10", with other strange (small) resolutions. 1280x720 is the TV standard 720P that is the most common resolution these days.

So what does that mean??
1024x768 = lesser detail level
1280x800 = medium (wide screen ratio)
1440x900 = more detail level (wide screen ratio)
Even though the DPI capabilities of any screen are more capable than the resoltuion I eventually select, I have to think of terms to my end user average screen width, correct?
THE BOTTOM LINE
I wan't optimum detail level especially in my backgrounds and sprites, more DPI equals more visually appealing images. My concern was that this selection for larger resolution was (maybe) going to have a negative consequence when I started running the game.
From what information you have shared I think I will choose 1280 x 800 and run with it from there. With the amount of work I have ahead of me I wanted to double check.

Lets just say 1280 x 800, I shot out the previous res as an example...So what does that mean??

1440x900 = more detail level (wide screen ratio)
