Here are three great references for Milkshape noobs.
The first one, chumbalum.swissquake.ch/ms3d/help/index.html, contains all of the Milkshape basics to get you started.
The next two,

and
www.dosfx.com/tutorials/csgirl/default.asp
present two methods for creating character meshes. These are not you typical character mesh tutorials, vague and software specific. These are full length tutorials that include techniques that can be used regardless of the 3d modeling package.
