just came back to torque 1.8.1. having shape problems.

I was working on a game a year or two ago, but had a kid and didn't have time to work on it anymore. i just came back and got 1.8.1 and now when i try to use my player model, the skin and animations are messed up. I noticed all the body armor he was wearing that had assigned materials looked okay, but the character's actual skin was messed up like the uv map was out of place. I don't think i ever assigned a material for his skin. It wasn't a problem before, but could that be the problem?
Also the animations don't work anymore. If I load him as an aiplayer, he is just permanently frozen in the middle of some unknown pose. If I load him as a player, he is in his default position (as created, no animation) with his arms stretched out. When I make the player move forward, he slowly moves into his ROOT animation as he skates forward.
Any idea what's going on here?
