Overlord Question

by Mr. Miller · in Technical Issues · 03/30/2009 (5:02 pm) · 12 replies

Did this project die? The one that is available for purchase, is it good or does it have bugs? The last it was updated was in 2006.

@Brandon: Where did you hear that?

Overlord has been somewhat dead for some time, even though I bought a copy a few weeks ago. It's okay, but needs some fixing up. There's a thread floating around on team management resources, and you can find information about Overload and it's competitors/successors there.

Wrong Overlord. This thread is talking about the PHP based project management system sold in the developer store called Overlord, not the game franchise.

@Mr Miller: I don't, but it shouldn't be too hard to find in a search on team management or even overlord.

I do regret buying it because it doesn't really support Double-Byte Character Set. So that my team won't be able to use it .

If someone on your team is a php programmer, they can add whatever they like.

Yep the developer behind Overlord joined GG as an employee and I don't think the product has been worked on since then. As a team we use TRAC to manage tasks, wiki, bugs, etc so it might be a solution for you

I brought Overlord on a recommendation from another Torque user. I didn't realise its no longer being actively supported though. That was one of the reasons I wanted to buy a piece of software with a real development team behind it - for regular updates, support, and cleaner features.
I'm thinking it would have been better to have gone with an open source project - may not have necessarily been as clean, but would have offered pretty much the same thing for no cost.
It wasn't expensive though, so its no big deal for me. There are a few interface things that I think could be better, and a few features that I would have like to have seen.

But to answer your question, it works. I haven't used it enough to have an opinion regarding whether or not it is the best tool out there in its price range. I would recommend having an in-depth look at the online demo. You may not care too much about the price, since its relatively cheap, but you don't want to start a project on one system then realise half-way through that it doesn't completely match your needs.
