Character Rigging

I've been searching for a few days now for a tutorial with some tips on how to rig and assign vertices to the shoulders of a humanoid without success. I've figured out how to animate the arms so that they will move from an arms-straight-down position to an arms-straight-out-to-the-side position but moving from an arms-straight-down position to an arms-straight-out-to-the-front position is killin' me! I've thought of countless ways to do it, however all ideas invite "destroy the mesh in the shoulders area" right along with them! Does any one have any ideas, hints, clues, references, asprine, etc...

Good resource...not great. It shows a picture of shoulder construction for a mesh but there's no way that mesh was been designed for animation. After inspecting the elbows on the finished character mesh tutorial I found that he doesn't adhere to his own elbow contruction process , another tutorial on that site. I figure he's willing to show how to make a character mesh but not how to make a character mesh that could be animated.
