Paint Shop Pro Photo X2 or Photoshop elements 7?

by Joe Martin · in Artist Corner · 03/29/2009 (8:44 pm) · 6 replies

I am looking to purchase photo editing software pain to create textures for DIFs and skins for DTSs. I've used PSP X2 to make a couple textures and skins as well as GIMP. I prefer X2 so much more over GIMP that I have no problem buying a copy of X2. My concern is I hear so many good things about Photoshop that I worry I may buy an inferior photo editing program by going with X2 which I like so far.

Can anyone educate me on wether Photoshop is superior and if so, is it so much more superior that it's not worth buying PSP X2 or are the differences negligible for a hobbyist game maker wannabe?

Photoshop elements is not Photoshop i can tell you that much i used Photoshop be for and i have Photoshop elements as it comes with my tablet. its no where near Photoshop its just a small version of Photoshop i don't even use it as gimp is far superior over it. it has some good uses with some of its water color or paint brushes that gimp can not have so its still good in some ways. i have added some brush's to it but gimp is still my #1 pick over it. i do not own the Photoshop elements 7 version though mine is little out dated and i have seen the updated versions they do seem alot better so it might be better then gimp if i owned a updated version. i own Photoshop elements 4 so it don't come with nearly the stuff the 7th has.

now Paint Shop Pro i have not used i still like to try it but have not got the time but i do hear good things about it. i just might end up buying Photoshop as its still far Superior then anything out there mostly with its 3D tec it has now. if you cant afford Photoshop then just stick with Paint Shop Pro if i was you.

Okay, if elements isn't the equivalent or better of paint shop pro, which adobe program is? The others I see on their site that are listed in the photoshop family are CS4 and CS4 extended, but I thought those were suites which I usually consider that to be a multi-product package, such as MS Office, Visual Studios, etc. Am I wrong and CS4 is the current Photoshop software?

i'm a coder not an artist,
but i do use both PSP 9 and CS2,
and they're pretty comparable imo.

well they are all called CS4 each package its basically just a name for new upgrades the next upgrade they will all be CS5. what makes each name pack different is when they call it Design Premium,Web Premium, Production Premium, Master Collection. each one comes with mutable products in side. you can buy each product on its own but i rather just buy the packs and save money and get many programs.

that where you can buy the new Photoshop on its own out of a package deal.

Photoshop elements 7 has most of the functionality you would use from Photoshop. It's laid out differently, but the tools are the same, and it has most of the layer effects. Because of the layers, tools, and plugins, I recommend it over Paint Shop Pro.

But, why don't you go try for yourself - there is a free 30 day trial from adobe. maybe you'll like it.

When you install it, click on "Edit". That will get you to the photoshop part.

I think I will download CS4 trial, but the price tag of $600+ for it might lean me towards PSP Photo X2. I can get it for $70 shipped. I'd rather save the $600 for Torque3D for now. Maybe down the road I'll come to purchase Photoshop's current edition. Thanks for everyone's input now I'm off to search tutorials on creating textures, preferably rusted metals.

Thanks again.
