2d sprights as a player

IS it possable to use 2d sprights a a player insted of a 3d model??
One way I thought of doing it wold be to have just a cube and make the suround color of the spright transparent so you only see the spright but what I want to know is it possable to make the texture play animation sequences base on user imput??
