Houdini EULA question....

Question about Houdini Apprentice HD.... The EULA states:
Yet, the product description page here: https://www.garagegames.com/products/houdini
States:
These two things directly conflict eachother... Houdini does not offer the same licensing because you can sell and distribute games made with TGEA or T3D up until you hit $250,000 THEN you need to upgrade... The impression I'm getting from the quote above from the Houdini EULA, you can't sell your product at all...
Am I incorrect here?
Thanks!

Quote:g) use the software for other than non-commercial uses

Quote:Houdini Apprentice HD offers the same indie licensing that the Torque game engines do, making it the ideal solution for all your game art. If your game goes mainstream then you can upgrade to a commercial version and you are all set.

Houdini may be used for non-commercial projects only. EXCEPT, for Torque game projects (Including cutscenes). That applies to the $99 version btw.

Does this include Torque X 3D for community games as opposed to the other Torque engines? To be clear can I buy the $99 Houdini and make models that I export as dts models and use in a Torque X 3D game and SELL it on xBox live community games (now Indie I guess)?

I think the last post may need clarification from Derek B. or another GG rep. I understand it[current SideFX EULA] to include the 'Indy' license structure, in the $99 Apprentice version[for commercial use]; so I would 'think' as long as you hold an 'Indy' license....for any Torque Engine, the same EULA applies...meaning you can sell a commercial product using Apprentice if you have an 'Indy' license from GG.

I agree. I would like to hear an official on the X versions of the Torque stuff. Being new to this I am also not sure if Indy is Indie which used to be Community Games or not.

As long as you are making under $250,000 and/or not associated with a publisher that makes more than that, you can use the Houdini Apprentice available on our site, otherwise you will have to upgrade to Houdini Escape or Houdini Master.
I'll keep my eye on this thread in case anyone has any other questions.

Hey guys, sorry I didn't get to this earlier to clear up the confusion. Houdini can be used for any Torque related products as covered by the TGE Indie license as Andrew pointed out. This includes creating cutscenes for your games as well as assets. The Houdini EULA also allows you to sell your DTS models in or as part of content packs. This license covers all of the Torque products, including Torque X, the iPhone products and Torque 3D.As long as you are making under $250,000 and/or not associated with a publisher that makes more than that, you can use the Houdini Apprentice available on our site, otherwise you will have to upgrade to Houdini Escape or Houdini Master.

Thanks for clarifying. I may just have to buy this. It is too bad I can't download the free version and try out making models for Torque X. Something about the file format. Too bad I can't download the HD version on a trial basis so I can try out the whole process and get some models into Torque X to play with, sigh...

@Tony - While you can't check out the actual pipeline into Torque, you can always download the free version of Apprentice to check out the modeling workflow and see if you think it will meet your needs. Here is the link for the Apprentice page: www.sidefx.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=589&Itemid=...

That has been my experience so far. I started with blender and then found that getting the models into XNA was a nightmare (at least with animations and textures the way I wanted). Then XSI 7.5 came out and the tools are a lot easier to use for making the models. I followed several tutorials and made some great stuff only to find out again that getting them into XNA was a pain. I had things set up wrong or used the wrong shaders or whatever.
Now I hear about Houtini Apprentice. Everything sounds great, but how easy is it really to go from nothing to a finished model with animation and textures that is easy to get into XNA? Torque helps a ton for game making and DTS seems to be a great format, but from what I have learned so far you have to do things just right in the modelling tool or your model doesn't work right.
So how is the flow form nothing to working DTS object for Torque using Houdindi Apprentice?

@Derek - Not a bad idea. The thing I don't want to happen, however, is that I spend the time to learn Apprentice and love the tools and then find out after buying it that even though making the models is great, getting them into DTS with all the bells and whistles ends up being a pain. That has been my experience so far. That's what I have my copy installed on and it works great.

I also went to the tutorials page and everything appears to be for Houdini 9, not 10.
Can someone recommend some simple tutorials on making a model, texturing it, animating it and getting it ready to export as DTS? I know I can't actually export to DTS yet, but at least then I can walk through the whole procedure and get an idea of using the tools to get to that point.
Maybe once I do my first model that way I can save it and send it to one of you to export to DTS so I can see if it worked?

I downloaded and installed it. When I go to the help menu and choose something my browser comes up to a web page. No matter what link I click on I get connection issues.I also went to the tutorials page and everything appears to be for Houdini 9, not 10.
