Question regarding porting to T3D

I am currently working with TGEA 1.7.1, on a project which has involved some source changes. One of the most complex changes was the "TGEA Dynamic Skins & Material Swapping" resource: http://www.garagegames.com/community/resource/view/14264/
I was wondering, would it be easier to port from 1.7.1 to 1.8.1, and then to T3D, or port straight from 1.7.1 to T3D?
Secondly, how difficult is a port likely to be? (Particularly regarding the above resource)

As far as to porting to Torque 3D in general, there will be some things that will come over very smoothly (quite a bit) and some that won't come over as smoothly (like terrains) due to new systems that can only be translated to a limited extent automatically.
