3ds Max r3.1 on Windows XP?

by Scott Casey · in Artist Corner · 01/10/2003 (6:04 am) · 5 replies

I am going to be buying a new development computer soon and would like to know if anyone is able to use 3ds Max r3.1 on Windows XP. If not then I will most likely go with Windows 2k.

Thanks!

I'm not sure, but 3ds Max 4 needs an upgrade on their license management system (it's a free download on the Net, look for C-dilla upgrade in google or something)...

I think the C-dilla thing was introduced with Max 4, so it shouldn't affect Scott.

I've used Max 3.1 on XP and it worked alright. That, however, was after using it on Win98, on which it performed like an obese koala. I don't think I've used it on 2K.

I had one problem with Max 3 where it would get these nasty slowdowns, and rotating in a 3D view would get very chunky even with very low detail objects. It happend on two machines, both with XP, but I don't know if it was a OS problem or a video card problem, because both had GeForce2.

That's all I can tell you. I'd suggest you wait for more replies before you decide, I think my feedback is less than conclusive.

Check out the 3DS Max link of this forum (log on as a guest):

There's an OS/hardware section with a thread on this very subject. And it's just as inconclusive as my first reply :). Yet still informative.

Thank you Spencer, that is all I needed to know. I am currently running it on Win ME without problems.

BTW, I went to your site and your stuff is really good. I wish I could pay someone with your talents. Unfortunately I will be stuck with my "programmer art" for the time being! ;)

Again, thanks for the response!

Thanks, Scott, I appreciate it! And glad I could help. I'm going to try to make art available as I learn the tools and add to the game. Like if I make a basic character, I'll try and post it. Although you're probably thinking custom art, eh? I guess in that case you just have to post your idea and hope it appeals to a like-minded art guy :)
