Which engine is right for me?

I'm trying to decide which engine and which version of the engine would best fit both my limitations and my ambitions. I'm a college student who works full time with a defined goal of working as a programmer in some capacity in the future, and I would love for that to be as a game programmer. I have a fair amount of experience with C++, but I still have a long ways to go. I'm not taking classes right now but I want to continue my learning on my own. I'm looking to Torque for an environment in which to work on my programming skills while creating projects I enjoy and being able to more easily mark my improvement.

I own The Game Programmer's Guide to Torque from a course I took but didn't finish, which I know is for the TGE. From looking at the projects I would like to work on, however, it looks like the TGB engine would be more up my alley. I'm also unsure if I should get the Indie Pro or just Indie license. Starting out I know I won't need to fiddle with the source, but I'm unsure if I'll want to farther in the future.

Anyways, just a simple question before I begin my journey. Any input is appreciated.

Any engine gives you upgrade options later for the price difference, so buying TGB without source now and upgrading later is no more expensive than buying it all at once.

If I hadn't gotten the very cheap early adopter price for TGB w/source, I still would have upgraded pretty quickly, as I like to be able to upgrade some of the included libraries, and generally modify how the program appears to the users. On Windows, the most convenient way to change the icon is by having source (resource editors don't sit well with me).

I say start with 2D - get TGB and start fiddling with it. You can still use it in trial mode for a while, I think.
