T3D Documentation? (See sticky thread up top!)

by Drethon · in Torque 3D Professional · 03/24/2009 (11:38 am) · 14 replies

Will we get a look at the T3D documentation before the beta comes out or later? I wouldn't mind event if the documentation was incomplete and poorly formatted as long as I get some general ideas on what I'll be seeing.

This brings on a good question, will there even be T3D documentation? Or are we to use TGEA documentation in the hopes that it will work for T3D?

I do not know if ya'll will be getting a taste of the new T3D documentation beforehand; the best person to shoot that question to would be Mich.

What I can say is that I believe the T3D documentation is completely done from scratch; with more in depth docs than we've ever had before. So yea, don't worry about having to use the old TGEA documentation and "hoping" it will work; you'll have something completely new/shiny in your hands =)

There will definitely be dedicated Torque 3D documentation. Some of it will come over from TGEA, but almost everything is getting a rewrite with focus on the World Editor and content pipeline. Mich can probably provide more info when he's done w/ GDC.

For those who have have pre-ordered we have access to the documentation early as well .

Also will there be platform specific documentation where appropriate ?

Thats good , Brett, becuase we would hate to go all AIG on you guys after the many posts of how the Docs for T3D will be X amount better. BTW how are those SFX documentations coming along? Ask Mike Perry about those, we brought it up last month in the IRC. So lets not forget the other half of the game, its not all about the world editor and content pipeline for some folks.

My plan is to have partial, but polished, docs ready to go for the beta. The full set will not be available until official release. Post-release, there will be a 2nd major update to the docs to hit anything I might have missed based on your feedback.

For now, let me try and dig up a preview.

Michael

I wonder what the community things about making those docs private only to T3D owners...

Something to think about.

@Syn - I've made all the other docs publicly available, so why would I not do this for Torque 3D? I will not push anything public until I am satisfied with the amount and quality of the content.

hehe, I'm not the boss of you, just a thought is all =)

I just want to see lots of people buy T3D is all... Out of curiousity what "demo" version of T3d will be available to the public? I'm not at all trying to be selfish, that's not what I'm portraying here... I just really REALLY want to see GarageGames rewarded for T3D.

From what I gather we will have quite a few demos embedded in our site. On another note, I've created the official documentation feedback thread for Torque 3D.

It is stickied at the top of this forum. I will unlock it when I release the first set of docs. Make sure to utilize the thread once you have read through the new docs.

I would love to see some more focus on documentating a lot more of the different GUI types and what they do (there are literally a handful you have to dig through the code to understand) and a lot of other systems that perhaps are documented fairly well in some older books, but really need to be brought to the light somewhere on this website. I think there is some good work on the basics and getting started, but after that there are a lot of great things that are available that are undocumented and probably go greatly unused.

Perhaps some kind of weekly or monthly highlighting topic about some areas most people are unfamiliar with would bring some of this to light.

@Joshua - Please post this in the official Torque 3D Documentation feedback thread. It's a sticky at the top of this forum.

Figure I might as well update my old title so future posters aren't confused :)
