Creating Area portals

Im not sure if this has been answered yet or not, But I'm wanting to know how area portals are used within V12.
Seeing as though Worldcraft is the prime tool for building creation, can you add a portal trigger within worldcraft to define the area portals?
Or are they exported from 3dsmax? or both?
I cant really see how they could be used within 3dstudio, so im thinking at this stage that they are defined within worldcraft, or morian.
can anyone shed some light on this?

how does that works exactly with this portal entity in WorldCraft?
And when I add a "null" texture to a cube or something, it is invisible, but not passable. so how does that works?

Make sure to "Tie to entity". You can find that under Tools I believe, or hit Control-T. Then make sure it is set to portal in the menu that pops up.Vic-D

Thanks a lot Victor. It seems to work! I've to try it out once exactly on a big map, but in WorldCraft it looks like it works. thnx

Try wireframe mode by pressing F9 a few times. Stand inside the building and look out towards the portal. You should notice a major reduction in terrain polygons shown, as well as what interor instances are rendered.

What does I have to worry about creating zones?
I got a buig building, a hall inside. But torque renders everything outside.
May it be that I got some leaks, and if so, is there a way to find them?

well, I'm now able to create portals, but it seems like it doesn't change any thing. converting my buildings, map2dif still said, that I still got only on portal. What does I have to worry about creating zones?

Check out the "Utilities for Mappers" resource. With it you can identify a number of problem areas in your maps. I'd say you have either incorrectly created the portal, have cracks between structural brushes defining the enclosure, or have detail brushes "breaking" the zone. (A bit difficult to see from your image what might be going on). If you want to send me your map I'll take a look.

what kind of screenshot would you need, to be able to say, what might the problem be?
I'll have a look, if I can send you the entire map.

It'd be a lot easier with the actual map to locate bad polys etc. If its not a problem, just zip it and email: desmond.fletcher@usm.edu

The 3dmax structure tool is a .map exporter so you are probably going to have to open up the .map file in Worldcraft and add any entities (portals, lights, etc.) and textures to it.
