What is the future of TGEA?

by Quentin Headen · in General Discussion · 03/20/2009 (9:05 pm) · 25 replies

Hello everyone. I am happy that the pricing and licensing information has finally been released for T3D. It is kind of a high price though because of course people are going to want to get the pro version of T3D and that is a whopping $1000. For indie game developers just starting out, that might be too high. So what is going to happen to the $295 Torque Game Engine Advanced? Will it go away soon after T3D is released?

@eb: I'm not sure what you mean by 'keep it honest.' I'll answer any question you've got about this stuff as best I can. As for TGEA not being final, no engine really ever is, but Torque 3D is the next big step forward and will be the basis for all future improvements thereafter. Thanks for the comments btw. It really does feel like there a good vibe in the community right now, and I'd love to see a lot of great projects come out of it in the next year. There's a lot of potential, and I'm excited to see what comes of it.

Brett,

When eb made his above comment, I immediately thought of this thread:

I have no idea regarding the legitimacy/accuracy/impartiality of it, but I figured you should be aware of it should GG feel the need to defend themselves :)

Looks like I had to create an account to view it. Title is "TGEA - Nail in the coffin" for those who don't want to click or create an account. Basically it's one guy who's pissed of at us for just about everything and thinks we suck, and another guy who chose C4 over TGEA because of the terrain. Okay. I can live with that. Eric is an impressive engineer and he's done a lot with C4, but the community is basically the same size it was last year and in the end, if you're investing in learning that tech, it means you're betting on one guy to support the engine for the future. I also wonder where the games are. Don't know what to say about the physics bitching that hasn't already been said, so I'll let it die there.
