Shadows are boxy

by Christopher Evans · in Artist Corner · 03/18/2009 (9:24 am) · 5 replies

I am working with an artist who is using Maya 8.5, and we are making a racing game. When we load the game the car and it wheels shadows are all squares. My guess is its using the bounding boxes to calculate shadows.

For kicks I created the same car using blender and it cast the shadows correctly. So I know that Vehicle objects can cast good shadows.

What are we are missing? I don't know how to use Maya and this is my artist first time making art for torque. We gone through the Maya to Torque tutorials, and we search the forums but can't seem to find out what causing the issue.

One other thing, sometimes our wheels get a "white highlight" (don't know how to describe it) when we are away from the cars. Anyone seen this before?

Thanks

I'm not a Maya user, but if it works correct when exporting from Blender, it sounds to me like there is indeed something with the exporter.

Maybe some semi-obscure setting?

Can you get a screenshot of the wheel-problem?

I understand if you don't want to show too much from a game yet to be released, I'm just asking to see the problem with the wheel.

Marcus,

Thanks for the reply.

I thought I was having the wheel issue on both the PC and the Wii, but it turns out I only have the issue on the Wii, so I can't give a screen shot at this time. I will try posting this on the Wii forums.

That's a bit weird, the one from blender works on both pc and wii? Or does both work on pc but not the wii?

I hope you figure it out :)

Okay, my guess is that you might be putting the collision mesh in the wrong group. Make sure you're not missing anything easy - Turn off "2 sided" mesh. Make sure you don't have any alpha info on your car.

Can you send a screen shot of your scene hierarchy from Maya 8.5?

Have you deleted the history on your meshes?

Just a thought.
