Off Topic - The best 3 hours of my life

by Shane McLeod · in General Discussion · 12/29/2002 (1:24 pm) · 16 replies

I just saw LOTR: The Two Towers and I have to say, that there has never been a single moment in any type of entertainment that has left me in such complete awe and so finely engrossed. I know I know, I'm being dramatic. But, DAMN that movie is incredible. Perfect in absolutely every way.

It is such a relief to see the great classic trilogy be reproduced so finely. Practically every scene could be framed as an artistic masterpiece.

Ok, I'll shut up now. By the way, it's pretty damned hard to impress the Madcap.

I felt the same way. 2 1/2 hours into the movie I realized that I didn't want it to end. It is so good that it makes me not want to even think about doing fantasy games anymore. It's all been done. I can't imagine how to do it better.

Peter Jackson is an awesome director. George Lucase should hire him to direct the final Star Wars, so maybe that series could go out on a good note.

I read the trilogy as a kid...the books inspired me...

I saw the first two movies opening day... the movies inspired me...

I like books. I like movies. I like games best.

Gimme a place like the one envisioned in the LOTR books/movies where I can immerse myself, cooperatively play with friends, and INTERACT with the land and it's denizens... which new events, locations, items, and creatures being added to a live player base...

Persistent Worlds... I've been bitten... everything else is boring crap.

I fall into the same boat , read the trilogy; seen both movies on opening day (as well as numerous other times). I am even getting a copy of LOTR for XBox when it hits on the 30th.

I saw TTT the week before Christmas...I just wish I had another person to drag along to see it again :(

I have to say that Gollum has to be the single best CGI character I have seen in a long time. Yoda's got nothin' on him :)

Now if only my girlfriend got me the extended Fellowship of teh Ring instead of the first one they put out, I would be a completely happy camper :P

I'll have to join everyone else on this on.

The Two Towers was stunningg, even better than The Fellowship. Now I can't wait until the final movie comes out.

I enjoyed, but I can't quite say it was the best three hours of my life.

Man yes it was LOTR but even if you take that out look at the directing.. it was superb. I saw it the day it came out and 2 days later I loved it. I was feeling like it was going to go on forever (not in a bad way tho, I was happy about that). The next one is going to be awsome though :)

Gollum will get the Oscar for best supporting actor. Yes, I never thought I'd say something as dramatic as this, but...: damn, I gotta reckon, its the best movie I've ever seen. And I've seen plenty.

The books, for a long time, have held the first place for me, Hobbit and Silmarillion included. I guess I have to admit too, that some of the inspiration for Vaxia comes from Tolkien.

Good, happy thread this is B)

I thought Two Towers was a pretty decent watch, but it wouldn't even get on my top 50 movie list, let alone best movie or best 3 hours of entertainment ever.

Ok, I'll bite. Then what would be the best movie you've ever seen, and why? Not even on the top 50 list?

Oh, for the record, I'd have to say it was the best 3 hour of entertainment in my entire life.

Okay am I the only one that thought the CG in TLOTR and TLOTR:TTT (sorry, I just had to use the abbriviation) sucked in places?

The graphics in the TTT are better, but the CG still sticks out like a sore thumb in places.

That fire guy in the LOTR, I thought, was terrible. Then today, I found out why. They had problems with their hard disk controller and had to redo that scene numerous times. I'll let that slide, because I know what battling buggy hardware and being under a deadline at the same time can be like.
(For more info on it watch this 130MB Quicktime Movie http://pez.oreillynet.com/media/NganKeyOSCon.mov [It has a funny outtake from the movie with Argon complaining about 3d scanners])

Around the same time in the movie, there are a couple shots of everybody from high above and Gandalf's beard appears to go white->grey all of a sudden. I suspect that's when they changed from live action to CG.

When they run out of the Mines, the Elf's run animation quickly changes to a walk animation and it just doesn't look real. It's like something you'd expect see in the torque engine ;)

The 2 parts in the 2nd movie that bothered me were when they were in helms keep looking down on the people and some were live action and some were placed using Massive. They just didn't seem to mesh together properly. The other part was where the scout on the animal surprized the people who were on the move. The animals just didn't seem to be moving through the long grass.

The Ents (I think that's what they're called) were cool though. I guess, with that extra year I was expecting more polish.

I didnt notice any of those flaws in the CG. Guess I just dont watch as carefully. :)

I loved the movie. The first one was great, and this one was even better. I saw it opening night at midnight with some friends. Then I saw it again later that week. It was amazing both times.

I wouldnt say it was perfect, but it would defenitely be high on my list of the best movies ever. I too would like to know what 50 movies are better than it, because I must be seriously missing out. :)

I'm in between George and Mac. I wouldn't say it was the best movie ever, but it did make it onto my top 50 definitely, and more likely onto my top 20. LOTR is good, but the trilogy I really wanna see more of is Matrix Revolutions. We are gonna see em both this year! w00t!

I saw it and loved it. The battle scene with the Ents was sad and amusing at the same time: they were peaceful, yet enraged. The book did their emotions a little more justice, but I personally have enjoyed the movies a lot more than the books thusfar.

Here's something to chew on: many members of the cast and production crew say that the third film is by far their favorite.
