Free Human Model

I have tried Blender and 3ds Max and I ca't seem to make a working character model. I was wondering if anyone had any generic human models laying around that I could use... I'm only using it for a small freeware game, and I'll give credit :D But there's just no .dts files anywhere on the web. Any help is much appreciated!

Is there a plugin for it? Something else?

Cheryl, interesting site that, how would you get a dts from it though?(I'm not on my workstation right now and I can't test the program yet)

You would have to use another modeling application as a intermediary for getting it Torque ready. You'll need to rig it, reduce polys, optimize it, etc. It does work great though to give you a nice base mesh to play with. I tested it a year or so ago and was able to "massage" the model in Blender for export to TGE. I didn't realize it (MakeHuman) was still in development, hmm...

(And a built-in DTS exporter would be more then nice!)

Yeah I tried it and a lot of features are turned off, I hope they get it up to release-level, it seems promising to say the least.(And a built-in DTS exporter would be more then nice!)

Most of the artwork that you see in games were produced by artists with years of experience. As you have probably discovered, it is not an easy task. Do some searching for low-poly tutorials, practice with a 3d modeler that has a less-complicated UI (MilkShape:$35, Anim8tor:free), develope your skills using the BASIC tools of low-poly modeling (Blender and 3ds Max, WOW...must be makin' a pixar-type film or somethin'). The two apps you mentioned offer WAY more than you'll ever need to produce a human mesh for a game and, therefore, can be very confusing. Don't give up on making your own human mesh or any mesh for that matter!!! You never know when/if that skill may come in handy.

It takes time to develop the skill to create game assets that looks good, me I'm spending a lot of time practicing on making humanoids as that's my main problem-area, whereas items, trees, houses and whatnot isn't a problem.
If you're just looking for a character for prototyping, well, anything can work for that :)
Try the blue box-man or Kork?
Make a "stick-man"? (That doesn't take a lot of skill. What, 5 boxes and one sphere, throw in some bones and animations and yer good to go!)

I agree with Libra, start out small and cheap/free.It takes time to develop the skill to create game assets that looks good, me I'm spending a lot of time practicing on making humanoids as that's my main problem-area, whereas items, trees, houses and whatnot isn't a problem.

I was playing with MakeHuman the other day and sadly Alpha 1 wasn't that impressive. I wasn't pleased at all with the option that they give you and the model results were rather fugly. I guess a person could use it as a retopography target, but that's about it at the moment. Maybe the future releases will be better, but since its FOSS software made for artists, but without artists in mind, I won't cross my fingers too hard.
@Chris
There is an Elf female that ships with Realm Wars (and with the Torque demos) that should suit your needs along with other various sample characters they have made over the ages. If you want to buy some models you can check out TurboSquid, ExisExchange or the GarageGames store and find what fits your budget best.
