I'm trying to make a sprite in photoshop and they won't fit in the cell.
How far should they be apart?

If you're having problems with the image moving, odds are you aren't centering it correctly when you place it on a single sheet. What I'd suggest, is making a single pixel frame around each layer before you place it on the 256x256 sheet, so that you can line it up perfectly, then erasing or flood-filling the frame out.
There are also grid settings you can set up in Photoshop so that they will snap to the grid. I don't know how to do this on Photoshop, because I don't use it anymore (GIMP).
I hope my explanation was clear.

What I do when working on cells (we'll use 64 pixels for an example) is I make 1 64x64 block, then do all of the animations as individual layers. Then I hide each layer to make sure that they will show up correctly. After that (let's say I'm making an animation with 8 frames) I will do 4 frames by 4 frames. 4x64=256 so I make a 256x256 sheet and place each individual sprite in it's 64x64 block.
