transparent backgrounds

hi im a noob anyways how do you make your artworks background transparent .im importing all my artwork from a different program.also do you guys know of any sprite programs which handle transparent backgrounds easier,you know just click the background and set to transparent.

ok i figured out how to do it,im using a new program named inkscape,i like it better than illustrator you just have to adjust the alpha and other colors level to none.works fine

What would I specifically have to do to make Inkscape put transparent pixels around my sprites?
