Help with long start up time on iphone

I would need some help with managing image loading with ITGB.
I am developing a game with several views made up by different full size (480x320) png images.
When tested on iphone it has several problems loading these.
Even without preload checked the imagemaps takes too long time to load. I have to load image maps progressevily in game to shorten the loading time.
I was wondering if somebody has suggestions about how to organize or do with the loading of images and animations.

There's another problem which I'm not yet sure if it is related.
The memory usage doesn't seem to be effected when loading the game on debug mode, but when loading the game on release it takes a very long time to load and takes upp so much memory that it almost freezes. It's strange since it should be on the other way around.
