How to create animated sprites for TGB?

i am a programmer and i would like to know how to create animated sprites for my characters, for example, in the Torque Platformer Kit, for tu "run" animation they use a 4 rows x 3 columns to animate that sprite. can someone tell me some tips on how to create that kind of spriteset and/or some techniques to do it?

I'm curious to know, also. I'm an artist, but I'm not sure about the concept of drawing a character that can be animated. If I want to have a spritesheet for a character walking, do I have to draw out each individual frame on paper and scan it in Photoshop? Is there a certain technique that artists use to do this so the sprites are all even and not blocky? I've been looking all over google for some tutorials on this, but I've yet to find anything...
