Is TGE still available?
by Jeramy79 · in Torque Game Engine · 02/02/2009 (10:52 pm) · 18 replies
I am looking on the site to see if it's still available to buy and can't find it anywhere. Is GG discontinuing its sale?

Brandon, you really need to stop spreading misinformation. No one at GG, unless something slipped by me which is unlikely, has said what exactly TGE's future is.

i read a post that one of them said they will be getting rid of tge be for the this year is over and i know i read it right so that means some time this year it will be discontinued be for we hit 2010. i can try to find the post that said that but its been about 2-3 weeks from that post and it was from a gg employee.

@Brandon - The point Scott is trying to make is that you are reading comments we (GG employees) post, then applying your own speculations and predictions. None of us have thrown out official, hard numbers on anything about Torque 3D, TGE, or TGEA, other than that Torque 3D is anticipated to be released in 2009. That's it.

P.S. Please keep up the work and support for TGE1.5.2.
02/04/2009 (4:04 pm)
It all depends on what your going for in the end, as im going for lower-end chipsets I will be using TGE 1.5.2 and have no plans for TGEA.P.S. Please keep up the work and support for TGE1.5.2.

Or inferring from other GG Employees' quotes like "However, trust me when I say that TGEA 1.8 is a true replacement for TGE and is well worth the upgrade." ~Matt Fairfax.
"At some point, TGE will likely either go away, or be licensed in a different way." ~Brett Seyler
"TGE is not gone yet and it's not going to disappear tomorrow, next week, or even next month. Next year? Possibly." ~Brett Seyler
So I agree, but I think you can see where he's pulling his idea from.

@Michael: I think he (Brandon) might be thinking of the quote on the TGE product page that says "TGE is no longer officially supported" in the tab for Upgrade to TGEA.Or inferring from other GG Employees' quotes like "However, trust me when I say that TGEA 1.8 is a true replacement for TGE and is well worth the upgrade." ~Matt Fairfax.

Yup. We've read the posts, too. What I was focusing on was stating speculative numbers as pseudo-fact. We haven't nailed anything down yet: prices, dates, upgrades, etc.

ya maybe that's where i got it from but i do remember one saying that be for next year it will be gone by then i looked for the post but cant find it there's just to many posts to look though. i don't want to spend all day looking for 1 post its not worth it.

I love the fact that GG does exactly oposite of what they say, so that they can make a few more bucks. I bought TGEA over a year ago and at the time there were rumors of T3D. GG employees came out and said that everyone was wrong, that TGEA was the official name of T3D and showed a product line with it and everything. It was all just a ploy from GG to keep people buying TGEA. That's really the wrong way to do business guys.

However, with TGEA to Torque 3D, this was not done to "make a few more bucks." The decision to switch to the name Torque 3D was made just before Brett starting posting his blogs about the engine.
No one is trying to rip anyone off or pull the wool over your eyes.

@Jeramy79 - Not completely true. We do have a track record of not sticking to engine names. However, with TGEA to Torque 3D, this was not done to "make a few more bucks." The decision to switch to the name Torque 3D was made just before Brett starting posting his blogs about the engine.

I'm pretty sure I'll get a response someting like "It's a completely new engine, so yeah you'll have to purchase it seperately"... right?
02/07/2009 (12:39 pm)
Really? So tell me why you aren't sticking with the TGEA name? Is it so that people will have to buy the new engine and not get an update under TGEA for it? All these people that just bought TGEA within the last year are screwed? Or are you going to let them upgrade for free? People asked these questions as soon as the rumors came out and GG's response was TGEA is T3D so no one will have to worry about it.I'm pretty sure I'll get a response someting like "It's a completely new engine, so yeah you'll have to purchase it seperately"... right?

People who have purchased TGEA will be getting another upgrade (TGEA 1.8.1) which will add more stability and fix some outstanding bugs (since the days of TGE).
In one of Brett's previous blogs, he mentioned that we are simplifying our lineup: Torque 3D, Torque 2D, and Torque Console Line.
Torque 3D (which is essentially TGEA 2.0) will be our flagship 3D engine. TGB will become Torque 2D, our flagship 2D engine.
Torque Consoles include Torque X 3D and 2D, iTorque, Torque for Wii/360/etc. Last I heard, there will be a discounted cost to upgrade from TGEA to Torque 3D. I do not have those final numbers, but it is an offer.

I understand your frustration, as far as the name change, since it was stated that TGEA was going to become T3D (and the url for the TGEA page is Torque3D as well). But you still got a great product, and its not like you bought TGEA expecting that you were going to get every update for free (GG has been very clear about that).
I also don't understand why its such a big deal for you, why not take the refund you were offered, and just buy T3D when it comes out, that seems like it would solve your dilemma?
"Anyway, I'm not begrudging your preference for Unity's website or tools. I've mentioned many times in the past that we're working hard on both ourselves because even though we're committed to giving Torque users options, the learning curve for new users can definitely be improved. Finally, if you'd like, we can certainly refund your purchase of TGEA. Send an email to me directly." ~ Brett Seylar

@ Micheal: You guys have said some stuff that I think you could understand aggravating new buyers.
"Moving forward TGEA will be our flagship product and I would love to have you along for the ride. Do yourself a favor and make the switch!" ~ Matt Fairfax www.garagegames.com/community/blogs/view/15671
I think that this, "It is a further continuation of the "TGEA" codebase but we are replacing/updating/enhancing some pretty major systems (terrain, lighting, editors, directory structure, docs, etc) along with a lot of bugfixing and polishing." ~ Matt Fairfax (a reply yesterday to a blog comment)
...could have been said more. because I think some people that are new to Torque, and haven't been hanging around the community are expecting T3D to be like TGEA at its initial release, completely different from the previous engine. But with that quote it should probably be said that T3D is more like TGEA 1.7, where it includes (the majority) of the previous engines codebase (this might stress people out less).

I dont get why people are angry. Torque 3D is so completely different from TGEA, they both use different languages. Obviously they are still going to support TGEA since its their torque script engine, while Torque 3D uses XNA...

It is essentially "TGEA 2.0".

@Tom - Nope. The base engine is still C++, the scripting language is still TorqueScript. It is essentially "TGEA 2.0".
