Certifications (MS, Cisco, BrainBench, Sun...)

I've heard several very opposed opinions whether to get certified or not (more of them are negative), therefore I ask you:
-are that wasted resources?
-is there any solid C++ (and software development in general) certificate?
-alternatives?
-your experience?

And just to make it clear, I do not say that any dev certificate equals with good coding skills and logic.

P.S. I would really like to obtain some proof of my C++ skills. At the moment they are little rusty, but my current job tasks make me use it again ;).

From an IT perspective, there's the proof of your resume and references... But if you're talking about demonstrating skills for use in the game development field, then I would think that you could back up your resume and references with some demos you've written. Just my 2 cents on that.
