Former team member stole my stuff

by Allen James · in General Discussion · 02/01/2009 (11:02 am) · 12 replies

I was talked into creating a game I had a idea for, by two kids I kinda new. 1 lives close to me, but the guy who came off as smarter, who took my lead, lives down in Florida, I met him through the other guy I did this with.

They finally convince me it can be done, and talk me into spending $1,500 on the advanced engine, and various packs.

I was having problems with mine, and he offered to help, by logging in, and seeing what is up. See I thought they all baught there own packs, I now see that aint the case. I havent heard from him since giving him my log in info, its been months and nothing on my game has been done, not even a websight. And my constructor code is now inactive! I understood that can only happen if its downloaed on multiple computers!

Can I have my constructor code revoked, or can I press charges on them for theft??

He downloaded TGEA from you? Hmm, I'm not sure. Since you let him on your account, it couldn't really be theft. But he did download a version of TGEA without paying for it, so I think GarageGames might be able to go after him for pirating. Wait for a admin to reply, though.

I know I gave him the info, but it was because all my art was showing all black, he said it could be something in my settings. I never told him he could download, certainly not as many times as he obviously has now. That never even came up, we had INdie versions, we all had to buy our own. I was told by him he baught his own stuff.

They straight hustled me, got me to buy stuff for a idea I had, then doped me into leting them onto my account. Stole all my stuff, then never got back to me.

I have 1 rule... Trust no one.

E-mail GarageGames and tell them you found someone that pirated their application/s.

Next time, ask for help on the forumns. That's why they are here. Never give someone your password.

Allen, I gave you a different key for Constructor, so you should be able to download it and install it now. Definitely change your password and DO NOT share it, as mentioned above :)

Good luck!

Can I charge them with theft, or piracy? This is so f'd up what they pulled. I just found out the 1 kid started a gaming company down in Florida. So now with my $1,500 they all use my indie stuff, and didnt pay a dollar towards it.

No doubt on not sharing the pwrd, but it just didnt seem risky. I have a lot of $$ these kids would have got paid working for me, I just dont get why they did this.

Anyone else out there wanna work on a MMO? : ) Before I give up and just try pitching the idea to gaming companies, witch I hear is much easier said then done.

Uhm, well lets see. The license says it is 1 license per programmer. Since you bought it first, that grants the license to you, not him. I think you should go after him. Sue him for more then $1,500, so that way he will feel as if he could have bought the engine in the first place. See if you can get Garagegame's to go after him also, since he pirated their software.

Two bits of advice:

First, don't let your anger at these guys get you too down. Think of it as a learning experience and move on.. you've got better things to spend your time on.. like...

Number 2. Ideas are cheap, if you want to pitch something, ask advice around here on how to go about doing it from people who have. I know just from what I read that when you pitch something, they want a lot more than an idea alone.

My .02 cents.

Cmon, I more want answers from them. Ive never in my life been lied to like this. I have diabetes, need a surgery soon for a morphine pump, have a 8 year old son with down syndrome. I could have put this $ to better uses, then helping some liars out. They lie to me, get me to buy stuff they cant afford, and want to use it for stuff I didnt even know about at the time. You guys cant just send them a email for me, asking how many times they downloaded "MY STUFF" Pleaseeeeeee! ::) Im bout to drive to Florida and beat the kid. But TY for your advice, its not going on deaf ears- AJ

Go to the cops or a lawyer. They can tell you much better than anyone here if you can press charges. Or maybe try your hand at small-claims court.

Never share your password. Since they are not licensees, they cannot legally redistribute anything that they have done or anything that they use. In reality, they could have downloaded it from a torrent and been "maeking mad gaemz!!1". Change your account information and make your game. And don't give out your information again. There's nothing on there that they need to see. If you are having a problem with a specific model, send them only that model (or better yet, post the problem here and let other, more reputable people help you.
