Continuous Environments

How would you go about making an environment that pretty much loops itself like the character runs and then once it gets to one end the engine loads up the other end again so he could just keep running.... like the earth except smaller or like one of those circular space colony type things

You would have to set a collision trigger that automatically loads a mission. I think this is what you would have to do. But there would be a loading screen. But I think this is how GTA has it done and World of Warcraft (they say rarely experience loading screens because the terrains are so huge and you only see the loading screen when you finish walking/running/flying across the whole terrain) has done it.

Or if you use a suitably large terrain, you can have the trigger just teleport you back to the other side of the map in the appropriate spot. The terrain would have to be big enough to continue past the view distance of the player when they hit the trigger.

Ted's idea is best in my opinion. It could be pretty seamless. That's really a great idea. And when you hit that trigger, you could easily flip a switch that rotates certain trees, buildings, etc. in a way that would make the terrain look slightly different. that way no one would ever get "Deja Vu". You'd just have to be sure that nothing that was being rotated or moved had lightmapped shadows on terrain that would look weird once moved.

that is a really good idea but would you be able to see the enemies because they would all have to be able to work im thinking i might do the environment in sections and then like every time you get to a new section the adjacent sections load in as a LOD version and then it would just keep going and i think that might solve the problem but im not sure i would have to test it so i figure i start off small and then if that works then i can go from there
