What's wrong with Unity?

by Wes · in General Discussion · 01/22/2009 (1:15 pm) · 71 replies

Over at the Unity forums they make a pretty strong case for using their engine over Torque. I'm surprised to find that the Torque community isn't defending itself.
Well here's your chance. Tell us why you prefer Torque over Unity (other than the obvious MAC ONLY issue). don't be afraid to get brutal, they're not showing you guys any mercy over there.

It was pretty timely update news with all the Unity threads around :P Good to know they are working on it - it means they seem to be listening to the community issues a bit.

Yep, we are listening, and we have been listening for a long time. We just don't have time to trudge through the forums day in and day out and quell everyone's individual fears. That's why having posting issues in the forums and allowing us to go through it with our bug tracker software is the most efficient way to get yourself heard. We've been doing it for some time, not just for TGEA 1.8.1.

We care about our community, but you are never going to satisfy 100% of everyone here. We do our best to make choices we feel cover the majority of our user base in the long-run, and go from there. It would be stupid of us not too because we are in for the long-haul. We explain what's going on where we can, and then we have to focus in on just getting things done. And with four releases of TGEA alone last year (versions: 1.7, 1.7.1, 1.8, and now 1.8.1) and a lot more transparent conversations in the last year, I'm confident that we're moving in the right direction.

ok unity is not a bad engine but like i said if its missing one thing well you better come up with a different way the engine can do it or just drop the game all together.

tgea is not the best engine but no engine is the best they all have + and - points like i said you just need to add them all up. i also picked gg because of t3d that will be coming out tgea is ok but t3d is far better then c4 and maybe unity. unity has good stuff its just without source i know i will need source i might not need it for my first game or the next one but i know i will need it for a 1 of the games at lest this is if i was using unity. i not going to buy unity and then get stuck i don't like taking chances and wasting money. there lowest cost license sucks and spending 2k or more just to get everything with there engine is not worth it mostly without source.

basically i need a engine with source as i will be making more then one game. i know if i use a engine that don't have source i going to get stuck some place and have to spend even more money and time with a hole new engine. c4 is not to far off from tgea but once t3d comes out c4 will be way out of gg league not only that c4 is run by one man is he die well everything will be put to a stop on that engine. i not going to buy c4 and then go and spend even more money for t3d as it will be far better. i rather save money by buying tgea then then get a discount off t3d for owning tgea.

i want to save money here not spend spend spend on 2 or more engines because they don't have what i need or what ever the problem is. i have money to spend on my game i just don't like wasting money that could of been spend on other things. i also like gg's big community that's one of there big +++ points then the other engines. i have also been recommended to use a gg engine by 2 people that's be for i even came here i never been recommended to use c4 or unity. there's just many reasons for picking a gg engine its just got to many +++ points then the other engines.

like i have been looking at tgea and t3d engine for a month now as i want to be 100% its the engine that is right for me. i have already reached 100% that's why when i get back from a small vacation i will be buying it. unless you think you can lower that 100% which i don't think you can as i have looked and looked at gg so much i am 100% confident its the engine i need. only thing you would be able to change the 100% is if you said that i cant do something with source which that cant happen anyway and you can do anything you want with source. there might be other ways to change 100% but they are the things i can not think of.

This is pure speculation, you have no way of knowing what T3D will really be like when it comes out - keep in mind that it is built upon TGEA, it is not a complete engine re-write or anything. It is basically TGEA 2.0.

Also the statement assumes that C4 and Unity won't be updated by the time T3D is released which is also not true. If even some of the C4 roadmap features are done by the time T3D is out, it will still be a very good competitor to T3D. I'm sure Unity will be adding more features as well.

It's all fine and dandy to say these things, but at least wait until you have the facts correct. Personally I think some of the 'fancy' movies T3D has been throwing around are causing people to get the wrong idea - but that's the whole point of marketing.

From what I have seen, T3D is NOT going to be substantially different from TGEA - yet some people seem to be under the impression that it is a whole new engine. I'm sure it will be a big improvement, but it is still the same engine.

Anyhow it's good that you have picked your engine and are happy with it, just make sure you know what it is capable of. I'm surprised that you can be 100% sure about T3D when we don't really know that much about it yet, but maybe that's just me :)

I wasn't too keen on the topic of this thread, and I think the recent discussion (dear lord I can't believe some of the stuff I just read) has derailed:

!!!!!!!!!!DERAILED!!!!!!!

I have read two "DIE THREAD" posts now, so I think I'll go ahead and lock before the flames and strangling begin. If someone has a strong argument to let this live on, feel free to e-mail moderators@garagegames.com
