trueSpace scnToDts plugin in the works

by Shane McLeod · in Artist Corner · 12/10/2002 (2:44 pm) · 27 replies

FYI, I love TS so I'm hard at work on the TS to DTS plugin. If there is no interest or if someone is already well on this path, please tell me so my time is not wasted.

I have the straight DTS portion almost completed and will work as much as possible towards getting this out the door. I don't have TS6 so all development and testing is being done with TS5.2.

Thoughts, concerns, feedback???

Great to hear someone is doing this. I'm also a fan of TrueSpace. Keep me informed of your progress. Their SDK is pretty good as well. I'm sure that if you completed this, it would encourage more people on the Caligari forums to begin work on game projects with Torque.

Sounds good. Should complement the trueSpace terrain plugin I just made compatible with the 256x256 png's TGE needs for terrain. trueScape v2.5 is 99% ready to come out.

FYI, this is a heightfield terrain plugin for trueSpace nearing it's 3rd generation. Along with a DTS plugin for trueSpace(that Madcap Mac seems to be working pretty hard on), you could do a majority of your game art work in trueSpace.

That's excellent news Ted! TS needs a kick in the butt to expose it to game dev teams. Sounds like it's going to get it.

I'm interested in both these things as well. I already own TrueSpace too and I'd hate to have to buy LightWave or MAX. If you need a beta tester for either of these let me know.

This one is pretty solid as far as testing, so it should be publicly available in a few days on the Primitive Itch site.

Mac, I wouldn't mind testing yours though =)

I'm sitting on a load of stuff that needs to get converted...

What kind of features will the dts exporter have (dsq, lod, etc)? Our group still hasn't decided which program to use: Max, LW, Maya, or maybe now trueSpace? It is the least expensive of the group which is a big deal for us. We're just using MilkShape for now :/

The TS exporter will support everything the Max exporter supports (DSQ, LOD, Text, etc). I've used the exact format for the config file and config file setup. Therefore, you will be able to use the dtsGlobal.cfg file from a Max user transparently.

I'm mapping this exporter as closely as possible to the Max exporter and behavior for consistency.

That is very very cool. I'd say with just that bit of info trueSpace jumped to the top of our list :)

Hey all
I went to the truespace website just to get familiar with it as our Modeling team is also using milkshape.

I noticed that there are many different versions of truespace IE:4,5,5.2,6,Atmosphere. I was just wondering what verison you were making this exporter for and if there is a big difference between them...cuz truespace 4 for 199 bucks seems like a great bargan. And an even greater upgrade to milkshape.

And has anyone used truespace before cuz i was wondering if it can make the collition boxes and whatnot like 3dstudio max can...from what i have read milkshape does not have the ability to create collition meshes or boxes therefor all shapes are not solid when place in the game(torque).

I am very interested in this exporter and am glad someone decided to take on this mission.

EDIT: Ahhh i see that he is creating it for 5.2 would it still work with TS 4 though cuz man 199 is a steal...heh i just went back to the site and hes got truespace 4 for 99 buck for the holidays

Hi everyone
Does this mean that I'd might be able to use truespace 3 as a learning program and also make use of it in torque. I'm only starting out in 3d so when I saw the newest edition of Computerarts (UK) with the full version of TS3, I thought it might be a nice deal.
(don't know if that program is even able to do anything but the demo I've tried seemed user-friendly)

Bryan, What's the link for the $99 special? I didn't see that on the site anyplace.

edit: never mind I found it. Of course the dts exporter might not work in 4 if it was designed for version 5.

Just so you guy's know, tS is great, but I bought LW, because I needed work now,

So I'm selling my ts packages still, if anyone wants to make an offer?

A url with pics and lisensing info is available here:
http://www.thebrycechronicles.com/four_d/

And Ted Southard will tell you I am a stand-up guy, so do not worry, everything is legit, paid for and licensed..

Oh, and I use Teds plug-ins, trueScape 2.0 and trueGrass 1.0, they are outrageous.

Donald,
I'd be interested in that. Are you asking $275?

I'm glad to see the interest. To answer a question above, yes, collision will be supported primarily using naming conventions as mentioned in the max2Dts exporter docs.

There were some changes made to the API between 4 and 5.2. My current focus is on 5.2 since this is the version I own and can test against. Once the plugin is finished, I'll be willing to retrofit the code to work on 4. But, due to my "free time deficit" I need to focus on getting the 5.2 version out first.

As far as version 3 goes, I have no idea. I will also look into this in the near future. I haven't even seen TS 3 but if I remember correctly, 3 to 4 was a pretty big jump.

@Ted, it would be great if you beta tested for me!

Also, you guys should definately download the latest demo. Caligari is in the habit of offering outstanding deals to people who have gone the extra step of downloading a demo. For instance, the Thanksgiving deal was TS 6 with all major plugins for $699 ($1400 worth of software), if I remember correctly.

Good idea, . This one of the best art packages for its price I use it quite a bit but I have been forced to use milkshape export my 3d artwork. I would be very interested in testing this for you if the exporter is compatible with TS 4.3. way to go we definitely could use more utilities like this.

Yep, Don's a good guy :)

Seems we're collecting a lot of stragglers from the TSML, hehe... Too bad you're selling your stuff Don, I had a free upgrade waitin' for those plugs!

Mac: Whenever you have a beta to test, let me know via email and I'll beat it up for ya! =)

Well, Ted, I didn't want to, but, I had to borrow money to buy LW and I need to pay it back. Fortunately, LW has gotten me some funds, but not enough yet, and I couldn't wait for you to develope the dts exporter for TS.

Anyways, TS was really good for, really got me up and going, and I learned tons about modeling. I love ts but I need to get rid of it to pay my brother back...

Oppps, looks like it's just sold!

Yeah, that was me :) I know how the short of funds things goes. That's why we've been using MilkShape..until now ;) It's really for the artist on our team. At least the license transfers. That's one thing I don't like about Max stuff.

I e-mailed you then at your email address of your paypal account. If the license isn't for you, then please e-mail me back by replying to the e-mails and include the name, address of the person I am to transfer the licenses to.

Thanks
