Torque Game Builder and Linux?

by Mashandar · in Torque Game Builder · 01/20/2009 (8:39 am) · 5 replies

Hello, I've recently became very interested in the torque game
builder and noticed that it says it has linux support, and I'm
wondering, does it only support linux exporting, or is it
possible to use the engine in linux as well? (I didn't see
linux mentioned in the requirements, only windows and mac.)

The last linux version was 1.1.1, which pre-dates most of the features of the system, including the "builder" part, and "behaviors" [also the current physics system]. Before the GG site redesign, TGB's linux was labelled as "community supported", but the TGB linux community is mostly dead now.

In short, if Linux support is something you need, TGB as it is right now isn't the tool for you.

I've tried to compile the Linux engine for TGB 1.5 some time ago, and it had some issues that might have been solved by now. The big problem is that GG used some platform-specific code to make the menu structure of the TGB Builder (where you create your game most of the time) which weren't easily ported. Exporting to linux might be feasible for 1.5. I don't know for the later versions, and I guess getting the builder to build and function would be too much effort to bother.

I'm not sure Sibsan. I guess it would depend on how well versed you are with Linux and how many source changes you wanted to make. But, yes, the source version would be necessary. Purchasing TGE wouldn't make your life much easier, though the TGE 1.5.2 Linux build may help out marginally when it comes to some pieces; the 1.7.4 source base has diverged enough that you would still have to get your hands dirty.
