VISUAL STUDIO 08 and XNA 3.0 and TorqueX 2, OH MY!!!!!
by Anthony Ayers · in Torque X 2D · 01/16/2009 (12:44 pm) · 39 replies
When is TorqueX gonna be compatable with Visual Studio 2008? The new website says tx2d && tx3d are both for XNA 3.0 and VS2008, but the MSI is still looking for VS05 or C#xpress, so you dont get any templates / functionality with the TX Builder. I'm sure this is frustrating many people and there isn't a solid answer on the website/forums. Please Help.

Same problem here. YOUR DOCS SAY TO USE VSE 2008 and XNA 3! Did exactly what it says...no templates.

TX 3.0 is still undergoing certification from Microsoft. Until then, XNA 2.0 and TX 2.0 with Visual Studio 2005 are what need to be used.

Thanks for the heads up. I've been wanting to ask the question, but didn't want to be pushy. Has anyone noticed that besides that, the wrong demo version of TX is listed? Also, I was just wondering what kind of certification they are performing? Is this the same type they use when you submit a game or something else like WHQL certification? Just curious and if you can't answer I understand.Brian

EDIT:
Also, that version is for Builder, which was not included in TX 1.0's download. It has since been included in the 2.0 downloads, so there is not a separate version for download available. The key will work in the 2.0 version of builder included with the TX download.

Middleware certification is much more intense than game certification, but it is definitely similar to publishing a title. Lots of hoops and you jump when they tell you. And you pay big money to jump as well.EDIT:

Well I just bought TX2D, because it said it works with XNA 3.0. Hopefully this will come soon. I kind of feel jilted, but I don't mind support Garage Games. I know good things are coming, but at the same time, I did just pay $150 for something I can't use yet. Going back to VS2005 isn't what I call progress, unless, I can work in VS2005, then convert the project to XNA 3.0. Has anyone here done that?

Yes, a project conversion from VS2005/XNA2 to VS2008/XNA3 is very painless. Just follow the upgrade wizard to update the .sln/.csproj file (all automatic) and then point to the XNA3 assembly references. The game code won't change too much either, more classes have been exposed and bugs fixed. John K.

Ok, I'll download the older versions and try out a test project. Thanks for the quick reply.

Speaking of this, do you know if they changed the licensing scheme permanently? Not that I'm complaining because it's about $100 dollars less... I e-mailed sales about a week ago and never heard anything. I still only have a license for TXB and they only want $50 more bucks to buy the whole package so I was wondering if I should do this or could it come back to bite me?

Not sure why I didn't get your e-mail, though.
EDIT: added @ to make the message less confusing.

Yeah. One of the things that is planned is to combine the builder and source into the license price. At least that is how I understand it (and have definitely been known to be wrong). But it was confusing to have multiple products and people who were purchasing "Pro" expected to get a builder license or if they purchased a builder license, they wondered why the version they downloaded was the old XNA 1 Refresh version (it was because Builder was rolled into the TX 2.0 installer whereas it was not in the XNA 1.0 installer).@Brian Bond / Max Smalls

Any word on what the upgrade path will look like for those of us who bought the Pro version last year? ie: will there be a cash outlay required to get the new engine? Will we need to "pick a side" in reference to 2D or 3D?
I really hope the we continue to get the engine for both 2D and 3D and can just choose to a builder version at the time of purchase.

Quote:@Brian Bond / Max SmallsHmm, could be the new site. I used the company/contact us option at the top of the page. No worries as that answers my question. I feel much better about the options knowing more on what's going on with the licensing since it kinda just changed with the site. Thanks! Someone should update the product features though... has some misleading information... example: Built-in Theora video codec playback.

@Brian
Yes, some of the product pages need a little revamping.

If you purchased both Pro and Builder licenses, I do not believe you will need to upgrade to TX 2D. I am not sure if it will apply to TX 3D, however.@Brian

It appears from this thread, that we can't use XNA 3.0 or VS2008 yet.
Will I have to re-purchase TX 2D or TX 3D when the 3.0 version is released, or will it just show up in the download section based upon my owning Torque X Pro?
Also - will a new platformer starter kit be released? I also had purchased that some months ago, and it seems it also won't work with XNA 3.0 or VS2008 yet.
Thanks for the clarification!

Having trouble making sense of this - my bad. Just to confirm - I purchased Torque X Pro and have a download link for that in my accounts section. It appears from this thread, that we can't use XNA 3.0 or VS2008 yet.

It would seem that TX2D is just marketing/branding at the moment. I sure hope I don't have to pay for another product to get VS2008/XNAv3...
Here's a suggestion for the website person at GG: post a page that describes the upgrade process; and please don't forget to mention if the source code is provided as part of the purchase.

James, I had exactly the same question. I went through the purchase process for TX2D and the page had TX2D as $0; so I purchased it and then TX2D appeared in my purchased items. Unfortunately the download link was the same as for my TorqueX Pro: torquexpro-2.0.0.0.msiIt would seem that TX2D is just marketing/branding at the moment. I sure hope I don't have to pay for another product to get VS2008/XNAv3...

David told me that once TX2D 3.0 is available, it will show up in our download link. We won't have to pay for an upgrade to 3.0.

Same here, I'm wating for the version 3.0 to start working. And check what kind of support are they gonna give to the network side of XNA.

We kind of touched on it in this thread: http://www.garagegames.com/community/forums/viewthread/82559 . The product don't seem to be all correct. TX 2.0 only works with Vis Studio 2005. TX 3.0 will support 2008 when it comes out. At least that how it was before the site change 2 days ago.
