TGEA 1.8.0 and Atlas

by Michael Vanderpool · in Torque Game Engine Advanced · 01/16/2009 (12:23 am) · 8 replies

I have just downloaded 1.8 and have been running through the source code up and down, but I notice a directory change, the atlas folder went missing. Now, I havnt been through everything just quite yet, but Im guessing the Atlas code has been merged into the rest of the terrain code instead of having separated code? I actually preferred the separated code, it was much easier for me to manipulate the atlas terrain to what Im trying to do with it. But if this helps me, then Im all for it. So was just wondering if it was merged in. and Btw, the New Site design isnt bad, but I wouldnt mind having the Snapshots, hehe, its was always great seeing what people have been able to do without blogs...

By default TGEA won't include atlas into a new project if you use the SetupNewProject.exe setup program.

It was discussed here and the fix for it is there as well.

Not sure if you heard but GG has decided to not continue atlas support after 1.8.0 ,I think.
At any rate atlas won't be part of Torque3D.

Seeing how my project relies on atlas I am a little bummed out.

I am trying desperately to finish part of my project and release it to the community in an effort to get GG to at least include atlas as an addon for Torque3D.

The Planet code based on Atlas, that would be fantastical, hehe. I think i might stick to 1.7.1 or 1.8 if you decide to release the code or anything... I cant see me completing my project without it, and Im sure I wouldnt want to try and hack it into the T3d code in the future... damns them...

Sorry for the double post, but maybe I could help you finish it up, if you need the help. What exactly are you trying to do at the moment? If your trying for atmospheres, have you tried modifying the particle system?

@Bill
I've been planning to write up some stuff concerning Atlas for a bit of time now. Hope I get around to it the next days.

Anyways, Atlas probably won't just drop dead and even if Torque 3D will not include it anymore, porting upwards from 1.8 will--as far as I can tell at the moment--be trivial. I hope/think, however, that even though not being part of the baseline anymore there will be some form in which Atlas continues to exist.

@Rene:

That is good to hear. I really prefer Atlas to the Legacy, despite some of its outward limitation.
