Confused about purchasing options

by Brian · in Torque X 2D · 01/14/2009 (10:11 pm) · 11 replies

Hey,
I just noticed that the way TX is setup now there is no free binary and the 2D and 3D version are separate? If I bought a copy of just the TX game builder before, what is going to happen in the future? Do I need to purchase the full package to be able to use TX2D 3.0 Binary and Builder?
Thanks guys,
Brian

I have the same question. If you are/were a creator's club member, is there going to be a TXB Free Binary for VS 2008/XNA 3.0 compatibility?

Also, the web site openly states that TX2D is available and compatible with VS 2008/XNA 3.0, in fact it says VS 2008 is "required" and yet there is a post on the forums stating that it is NOT compatible. So what's the deal?
Let alone, I've been using the free binary of TX under the assumption that it would be compatible (and still free) when I wanted to release on Community Games and if I bought the source I'd get the 2D and 3D engine together for about $150. Now it seems that not only is it not released/not compatible, it may not be free for the binary, and also the source is now going to be $150 +$250 = $400 to get both the 2D and 3D engine functionality.
Doesn't sound very enticing to me anymore.
I'd also rearrange the site a bit, as, technically TX is not "just" a console engine, it's a PC/Console engine combined. The way it is presented now is a bit tucked away, and a bit misleading. I actually had to think about where to go to find a product I was already aware of.

Yeah, as far as I can tell, the whole sales page on Torque X is broken, there is wrong information (from the other game engines) and the links are wrong. As far as I know, Torque X will continue to release a free Binary version and a Sold Full Source version. Trial versions of the tools are bundled with each release, but are sold separately. And like the C++ Torque Engine, Torque X is split into 2D and 3D engines that are licensed separately. I am not aware of the pricing or upgrade details.

Well thanks for the input, that's somewhat reassuring at least.
It seems the web site update was a little too far ahead of the release of the actual TX tools, making things a bit confusing/misleading.
I'm looking forward to seeing what actually gets release, in what package type, and at what price.

Nice to know. I thought something might be off by this being listed as a feature: Built-in Theora video codec playback.

To get this right: The Torque X 3D Builder will be sold separately from the full source verison?

@Thorsten
Yeah, I'm pretty sure it was that way before too since I bought just the 2D Builder before. I think it was supposed to be the Binary was free, source code costed money, and both builders were bought seperately. I'm pretty sure it's because TXB 2D is based off of TGB and TXB 3D was written from the ground up specifically for Torque X. But I could be wrong. :)

I hope so, but I was a bit confused by the 250$ pre-order price on the TorqueX 3D product page :)

I think that is about the same as what the whole thing costed for Torque 2D before. I paid $100 for TXB 2D and was waiting for TX 3.0 to license the source code which should have been $150 so it might be right for the package deal, but I think it is missing the individual purchase options.

I'm not sure, I'm still waiting for the dust to settle on the website. I think it should be cleaned up soon.

I did EXACTLY what the instructions said and it doesn't work. I installed VSE 2008, XNA 3.0 and then the latest torquex 2.0. No templates...nothing. Great. Way to go. I got it with my xna subscription.

How can they sell a product that doesn't even work? I think I'm going to contact the better business bureau. There are posts all over the forums about this and they won't even address it. Shameful.

Torque X 2.0 requires VS2005 and XNA 2.0, when Torque X 3.0 is released, it will support VS2008 and XNA 3.0
