Bad reviews of torqueX does 3.0 Change it?

by Brandon · in Torque X 2D · 01/12/2009 (11:30 am) · 10 replies

I've noticed that torqueX get some bad reviews in the xna community and even on the torque game engine wiki. Specifically saying a lot of the 3D support is non existent or broken such as shadows, skinned meshes, 3D rigid body physics, blah blah blah.

Is 3.0 going to be a major 3D enhancement to TorqueX which makes those reviews for the most part unfounded?

Are there any notes on what is going to be in 3.0 vs 2.0? I feel like maybe people in the xna creators club tried torqueX out for a minute or two and didn't like the 3D support so just give it an overall bad rap, but hoping that 3.0 is where the 3D support will really shine..

any insight into this?

3D Support was lacking in 2.0, but was available.

3.0 will definitely address the issues people are posting. TorqueX 3D is completely geared toward 3D game development, which includes a new editor that allows you to build your missions rapidly in a WYSIWYG environment. You can see a preview of that in the online documentation.

Great. Can't wait for it to come out.

The 3D editor is new, plus tons of bug fixes, improved rendering performance, support for skinned DTS meshes, and full support for Xbox 360 deployment.

what we need just as much as the 3D editor is updated and expanded documentation. I also hope they release a few good starter kits.

Great point. By the way, what kind of starter kits would you want?

How about a online multi-player starter kit - demonstrating how to contact other players and initiate game sessions, etc...

Good one! I'm working on a multiplayer FPS game based on Torque X. I can probably pull something together to get everyone started. I wanted sooooo badly to have a multiplayer chapter in the Torque X book, but had a deadline to get the book out. I also think a solid starter kit for creating user interfaces might be useful. Any others?

I think that a multiplayer (like the TGE FPS Starter Kit) and a GUI kit would be a fantastic starting point for most developers.

Anyone interested in a Live! enabled multiplayer game should listen to this presentation from Gamefest 2008. It talks about some things on how you get voice capability and match making for free but all the Live! services eat a lot of your bandwidth!!! I'd love to see a network component though. :)

I'm curious if you ever got your update released, John.
I'll have to check out your game soon.

It's funny, I haven't quite decided on whether to pick up Torque 2D or 3D yet... I was hoping to get through this book I picked up. Was just reading up on some XNA projects when I stumbled upon this blog... very surprised to realize you are the author of that book! haha Thanks for the help!
