TGB sprite program

Quick question for everyone. I'm looking into using TGB to make a 2D action game. What is a good program for creating 2D character sprites? At this point I have Illustrator CS3 and I know it has sprite editing capabilities, but frankly, it's kind of a pain to use. I haven't used it for 2D sprite creating yet, but with my experience with just making pictures, I find the whole program to be a little unfriendly to users. I was wondering if there was anything that is a bit more intuitive and user-friendly for making 2D sprites. Any help I can get would be great!

But guess it all depends a bit on the style and resolution of your sprites. For higher-res, more realistic sprites, you could render them out in a 3D app or create some cool stuff in ZBrush (which BTW is also awesome for creating seamlessly tiling images). Using a vector package like Illustrator probably isn't such a bad idea for higher-res sprites, too, though I think I'd rather prefer Flash then.
For the lower-res, really classic stuff, basically any reasonably complete bitmap editor will do.
