Should I upgrade to TGEA?

by John Stinson · in General Discussion · 11/30/2008 (9:47 am) · 2 replies

Okay, well, I just bought the upgrade to TGE to 1.5. However, I've been reading that TGE is now going down and GG is going full support on TGEA. Does that mean I should change to it or just stay with TGE? I bought TGE awhile ago but couldn't really use it do to some things coming up so I still haven't really even learned how to use it. If I were to switch to TGEA would it matter that I have no experience?

Thanks.

Edit:: Okay I'm going to be making a very simple RTS game (4 units and 5 building types). I already have the TGE RTS pack.

That's really a judgement call. TGEa is certainly the future of Torque but it does still lack a few (somewhat minor) things. I'll grant that the learning curve is bit higher than the one for TGE, because it does more, but don't be scared by the "advanced" tacked onto the name.

I don't know if the RTS pack has ever been ported to TGEa, so if you are making a RTS game I would continue using TGE for now. You could possibly ask around the RTS kit forums (if it has one) to find out if it has been updated. Once you complete your game and have a better understanding of Torque or if a RTS TGEa update does exist then would be a good time to upgrade.

Yes, upgrade. You won't regret it. If you don't fiddle with atlas or any materials, its pretty much just like working in TGE but with much better performance(and support for bigger terrains). Most scripts will port directly over without modification. Atlas and materials are not hard to work with either.

Like I said, you won't regret it. There is bound to be some ports of most(if not all) of the RTSSK in the private forums for TGEA. I do recall seeing a lot of threads about it. Basic RTS functionality wouldn't be hard to implement into TGE/A if you are experienced.

BUY TGEA
