General Question - PS2 from USA works in Australia?

I know it's not exactly GG worthy but I want to buy a game from the USA (Rebel Raiders) for the PS2. Will this work on my Australian PS2 or is it a PAL/NTSC issue?

So even if it switches to NTSC and my tv syncs with it, chances are my PS2 wont play it because it's locked to region 4?

Yes. Most games are locked to the region they are released in, even if the consoles themselves are not. The PS2's were locked, however, and the PAL/NTSC issue has been around in the import community for a while. My Japanese PS2 didn't seem to mind with my TV since the television did the conversion (easier to allow for both and sell one set in the international community than develop two for different markets).

Well bugger - so then I'm looking for a region 4 version of Rebel Raiders for the PS2 if anyone knows of a region 4 / PAL version please let me know.

Edit:
I don't think the GameShark on the PS2 does it, but the Dreamcast version of the GameShark would let you play imports.
EDIT:
It's been a while, but if I can get my PS2 and accessories out of storage and setup in my house, I could see what my setup was. Of course, I also had a modded PSX, Saturn loader, and a Japanese PS2 to avoid the hassles of the multi-wire modchips when it was first released. So I'm not sure which I have working. I may only have had the PSX working with PAL games for Hell Night and such from ATLUS. Yeah. I'm one of those scary MegaTen fanbois.

You can look into boot discs that allow for using other region, official discs on the PS2. I think there is a no-mod disc version that works with them. I also had a PAL->NTSC signal convertor that I picked up for $10 for my Saturn (I think...it's been a while).Edit:

As far as fromat goes. All PS2's, at least the new small version does, support both PAL and NTSC. But your TV/Monitor will need to suport the format as well. Many european TV's support both formats, but I'm not sure about Australia.
