We have a game programming unit at Uni and as a project I would like to add a networking capability to the University Game Framework using TNL. Its for learning purposes only and perhaps demonstrations to other students as a way of attracting them to study the unit.

Would I be able to use the TNL freely?

I considered using Directplay but its no longer available as part of DirectX and TNL seems like the next best option.

Thank you,

Donovan

Hello Don.
Some links for you:
Academic resources: 216.116.32.49/solutions/education/
This page has email link and Phone number to contact GarageGames to inquire about Academic pricing.

Description Page: 216.116.32.49/products/27/
This page is a description of TNL with a price for one Indie license.
Here is the EULA 216.116.32.49/pg/product/eula.php?id=27

openTNL site has documentation for TNL 1.5.0 dated back to February 2005:
opentnl.sourceforge.net/doxydocs/index.html

And if you want to try to work with this older version:
sourceforge.net/projects/opentnl
You can download the source and attempt to compile it.
It is an old GPL version that you and the students can use freely under the GPL license agreement.

Wish I could offer a more help but those are your options.

Yes, you can use openTNL freely under the GPL. You have to release your source code to the project as per the terms of the license, but since it is an academic project there should be no problems with making the source available.
