Payment structure for hiring lead programmer?

I'm an artist getting ready to hire a lead programmer on a full-time basis to begin production on a game. Does anybody have any advice on how to best manage the remote working relationship? Does it work best to structure the payments as a fixed rate for each day, or is payment by the hour more common?

I personal think that you need to define exactly what he needs to do, and agree on the timeline. There is 2 ways to look at this. Assign X number of time fo accomplish a task for X dollars. OR You could leave it open with a general pay per month and layout a list of priorities. IMO, you need to talk to the programmer and find out how much time that person has to work on your project first, and agree on a number. As its my experience that most programmers say they want to work, but they suddenly dont find time to complete tasks despite being paid or having a clear goal/milestone.
