Garagegames and console games?

by Entr0py · in General Discussion · 11/21/2002 (7:23 am) · 8 replies

I haven't really run across any info regarding how Garagegames stands on the console game market. I know that they are willing to split marketing costs, but would GG be willing to deal with printed materials and such required to sell a console game, or is GG strictly download?

IMHO, indies cannot compete or even begin to get into the console business. All console titles are approved for development and publication by the company that owns the console. They are only looking for blockbuster titles with big development budgets.

Also remember that unless the company that makes the console will back your game it won't go very far. Nintendo for example use to put a Official Seal of Nintendo on any game they backed.

Gauntlet wasn't approved and that game rocked! ;)

I think Microsoft should provide indy/hobbiest support for the Xbox.

It seems like it would be the easiest machine to develop for.

I really doubt its possible for an indie (unless they are stinking rich) to produce a console game... its just not feasable with having to buy dev kits and hire teams who know how to produce games for that system and the sort... the only console which I (keep in mind this is just my opinion) think would be possible to develope for would be the Game Boy Advance, and this is just because a friend and I are in fact making a game for that console. You dont have to buy one of those 20k dollar development stations to program for it (although nintendo probably wont publish your game if you dont), and it is fairly well documented with communities supporting the gba and plenty of tutorials for working with it. So if your an indie and want to make something for a console, then the GBA isnt just your best shot... its probably your only shot.

Well I know a guy who did make a playstation game (indie) and that was back before PS2 came out. I guess I will ask him HTF he managed it.

If you have the cash, theres nothing stopping you from buying an Xbox development kit, I know some people ported MAME to the xbox awhile ago, it will probably never be released as a commercial disk but ... hey its still cool.
