3ds max price

by Chris Beaudoin · in Artist Corner · 11/08/2008 (4:13 pm) · 3 replies

Hello, my team and I are looking at 3d modeling programs. We would like to use 3ds, but it is very expensive, so if anyone would have suggestions for the following that would be great:

a. where could we get an older version of 3ds for cheaper

b. what would be a viable alternative to 3ds

You cannot legitamitely buy an old copy of max, maya or most other big 3d programs as the licenses for these programs are bound to an individual or company. You used to be able to get a slight price reduction back when the majority of the 3d apps weren't owned by one company (by saying you were interested in another app) but obviously that is not the case.

With regards to other less expensive apps blender, milkshape and Houdini are options.

Overall I recommend buying what best fits your skillset and will allow you to collaborate with other team, contracts or 3rd party solutions so that you can achieve your goal of makng your game.

Milkshape is pretty simple, but great for game characters. Houdini is only slightly more complicated for the same things, but has a ton of extra possibilities. Blender is free and powerful, but scares people off with its interface ;)

Get the trial if Milkshape and Houdini LE to see which your modeller(s) find best.

I have to poke in here a bit as Logan is only 'allmost right'.

Software sold in a country have to abide with said countrys laws. In Denmark for example, the laws regarding sale of software to end users are to be regarded as a simple sale and not as a license. Thus are users from there actually allowed to sell their applications again, as long as the transaction information is done through/with Autodesk.

I only spent a very short time tjecking up on some sites, but easily found out that Adobe has 'transowner' info on their Danish site, coulden find somehting on autodesks as easy, but the sentence "Since Autodesk licenses are not normally transferable," did kinda catch my eye.

So, get a hold of the reseller in your country, and find out what is possible is 'my' best suggestion Chris
