Docment generation batch file wiped my hard drive
by Joe Spataro · in Torque Game Builder · 11/05/2008 (9:57 am) · 12 replies
My install dir was:
D:\projects\torque
I ran the batch file:
D:\projects\torque\tools\docGenerator\userGenerateDocs.bat
It wiped my D: drive.
is this a known issue? Is there any way I can get back what was lost?

- Operating System
- Main Drive letter (which has the OS)
- Number of drives
- Version of TGB
I find it hard to believe no one has ever had this problem before you, so we need to test immediately.

My initial test here shows the generator should fail out due to missing files and bad command parameters.

Another question: Did you modify any of the files? My initial test here shows the generator should fail out due to missing files and bad command parameters.

I ran the batch file to generate the VS2005 projects, and I opened the .sln in VS2008, which converted all of the projects.
I also installed the Platformer Starter Kit, and created a new project based on that template in the TGB startup screen.
Finally, I created a level (.t2d file) and a torsion project.

It's difficult to remember all of the operations I did, but I can say for certain that I did the following:I ran the batch file to generate the VS2005 projects, and I opened the .sln in VS2008, which converted all of the projects.

I meant, did you modify the batch files or any of the files related to it? Did you actually look at the batch file before you ran it to see what it could do, then edited?

I did open it to see what operations it performed, however I didn't modify it.

1. Was anything moved to your recycling bin?
2. Was the D: *completely* clean? You didn't get any kind of errors or warnings when PHP was trying to delete itself? Usually the doc generators will spit out a log or output folder in the same area as the tools. Nothing there at all?
3. Have you tried using a restore point (if you have one)?

D wasn't completely empty, there were numerous folders (which were empty). Those folders with php.exe and some others with .dll files were not empty.

The recycle bin graphic indicated that it had contents but upon opening it, it was empty. I did do a system restore, but I had my settings to only allow for 4 gigs of data. I'm going to try alternate methods of recovery when I get home tonight.D wasn't completely empty, there were numerous folders (which were empty). I use a few different programs that can recover pretty much anything that has been deleted, but I think that is your only option to recover your files.
We are working on replicating the problem you ran into, so others do not encounter this issue.

@Joe - Eesh. Well, at this point I can recommend you to use file recovery software. The data on your drive is not completely gone. It's not zeroed out.I use a few different programs that can recover pretty much anything that has been deleted, but I think that is your only option to recover your files.

I'm going to do some further testing at home tonight and hopefully I'll have an exact series of steps to repro it.
